Most of my experiences at dental offices have been painful until I was treated by Dr Cirligeneau, he is truly the best Dr I have been treated by. I got Invisalign’s and after every check up I would leave the office with my lips feeling so swollen and my gums in pain. Dr C didn’t even numb me and the whole time I felt zero pain. He treats his patients with the utmost care and compassion. He made me feel very comfortable and every second when I was expecting pain, he would make the experience completely different, zero pain. Him and his team are the best!

How to Prevent Periodontal Disease

Take Care of Your Gums: Learn What Periodontal Disease Is and How to Keep Your Teeth Healthy

Are you aware of the importance of maintaining healthy gums?

Periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, can be detrimental to your oral health, and in extreme cases, it can even lead to tooth loss. In this article, we will explore what periodontal disease is, its causes, and most importantly, how to prevent it.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is a persistent infection that attacks the gums and bone that support your teeth. The infection begins when bacteria from plaque buildup and cause inflammation in the gums. There are two main stages of gum disease – gingivitis and periodontitis.

Gingivitis is the milder form of gum disease, characterized by swollen and bleeding gums. It is usually reversible through proper oral hygiene and professional dental cleaning. However, if left untreated, it can progress into periodontitis.

Periodontitis is a more severe form of gum disease that affects the bone and tissue that support the teeth. This can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. Symptoms include swollen gums, bad breath, and painful chewing.

What Causes Periodontal Disease?

Several factors can contribute to periodontal disease, including:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Smoking or tobacco use
  • Genetics
  • Stress
  • Diabetes
  • Pregnancy
  • Medications
  • Poor nutrition

How to Prevent Periodontal Disease

The good news is that periodontal disease is preventable through proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups. Here are some tips to keep your gums healthy:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, using fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth.
  • Use an antimicrobial mouthwash to kill bacteria and freshen your breath.
  • Quit smoking or tobacco use.
  • Maintain a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals.
  • Schedule regular dental check-ups every six months to detect and treat any oral problems early.

Treatment for Periodontal Disease

If you suspect that you have periodontal disease, seek treatment from a periodontist as soon as possible. They can diagnose the disease and recommend an appropriate treatment plan. Treatment options may include:

  • Scaling and root planing: a deep cleaning to remove plaque and tartar buildup from above and below the gum line.
  • Pocket reduction surgery: a procedure to remove bacteria and smooth the tooth root surface.
  • Soft tissue grafts: a surgical procedure to repair receding gums.
  • Bone grafts: a surgical procedure to replace lost bone due to periodontitis.
  • Dental implants: an option for tooth replacement for severe cases of tooth loss.

Maintaining healthy gums is crucial to your overall oral health. Take care of your gums by practicing good oral hygiene, avoiding risk factors, and scheduling regular dental check-ups. By doing so, you can prevent periodontal disease and keep your teeth healthy for life.
