Discover the Benefits of Cosmetic Fillings

Looking for a more aesthetically pleasing alternative to traditional amalgam fillings?

While amalgam fillings are effective, their silver coloring can often have a negative impact on your smile.

Composite fillings are tooth colored and help to maintain the integrity of your smile, particularly in high visible areas such as the front of your teeth.

White Plains Family Dental Arts made my experience with wisdom tooth removal smooth and much less scary than I was expecting. Everyone is very friendly and comforting. I was super anxious, but they took the time to comfort me and answer all of my questions. I was able to get through the removal without laughing gas (something I didn’t think I could do)! Thank you for your help!

The Pros & Cons Of Silver Fillings

Silver amalgam fillings have been used by dentists for over a century to repair decayed, cracked, or fractured teeth. However, they are not aesthetically pleasing since their silver color is easily noticeable. As a result, they are primarily used for back teeth. Despite their lack of aesthetics, they are still widely used, and they are very durable and long-lasting. Over time, however, they will need to be replaced, and the safest way to replace them is to use a composite filling. Silver Fillings are made of amalgam, and contain trace amounts of mercury. This is why they are no longer the standard of care for healthy, holistic dentistry.

The Case For Composite Fillings

Simply put Composite fillings are a more aesthetically pleasing option. They are used to repair decayed, cracked, and fractured teeth, and can also be used to fill in chipped teeth or close gaps between teeth. Like amalgam fillings, they are durable and long-lasting. However, they are more aesthetically pleasing, particularly for front teeth or highly visible areas. Composite fillings do not contain BPA or mercury, and are a safe, biocompatible material when it comes to restoring your smile. Composite fillings on front teeth are called bonding, and look exactly like natural teeth. They can be used to reshape the smile, close gaps in the teeth, and improve the color and appearance of the front teeth.

Procedure Overview

When you get a filling, your dentist will numb your tooth, remove any decay, and clean the area. If the decay was near a nerve, a special medication will be applied for added protection. With composite fillings, only one appointment is usually required. The filling will be precisely placed, shaped, and polished, restoring your tooth to its original shape and function. If you grind your teeth, the dentist will likely recommend a protective night guard, to protect your composite restorations from chipping or wearing away as you sleep.

Replacing Metal Fillings

If you have metal fillings and wish to have them replaced with composite fillings, you can do so. Sensitivity to hot and cold is normal immediately after a filling, but your tooth should acclimate quickly, and the sensitivity will subside. Your dentist will provide you with instructions on how to care for your composite filling, and as always, maintaining good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits will promote optimal overall dental health.
